Parallel to the design project LundbergDesign was also involved in creating the new web based booking system – the first touchpoint between MTR Express and the customer. The idea was to harmonize the booking system with the actual planning and design of the train. Simplicity and reliability are key words for the seamless design of the whole system. The red exterior with its dark grey and silver flow design gives the train a unique and strong visual identity, not to be mixed with other brands on the Scandinavian market. The exterior flow design is inspired by the natural flow of the smoke that is used when doing the wind tunnel testing of the train. The graphics language is based on a carefully selected typeface with a visually clear design providing the MTR Express brand with a unique and strong identity. Impressive on the outside and even more so on the inside. The elegance of the entrance and vestibule is the first indicator of what awaits within. The interior of the MTR Express has been designed to meet the highest demands in terms of spaciousness, design and style. The Passengers who occupy the luxurious seats enjoy a generous amount of space and comfort. The seats are made of high-quality fabric and leather and perfectly match the interior. The interior treats all passengers to stylish selected products, materials, lovingly crafted with plenty of attention to detail. A close collaboration with ateljé Lyktan, Breitling and Nespresso ensures a supreme level of travelling pleasure.

Olle Lundberg has been the project manager for the Gröna Tåget interior and exterior design project. A great many sub-projects with different aims and directions have been conducted with a focus on passenger´s behavior, needs and perceptions. The purpose of the different design concepts is to constitute an idea bank for train suppliers, operators and other players in the rail industry. The objective was not to create a cohesive finished train but gain deeper knowledge of the the different parts and functions of the train. This creates scope for separate design studies and penetration of a sub-area without their needing to otherwise relate to the train. The design work has generated hundreds of ideas and design concepts that are ready to be developed into final products and services. We have focused on six main areas; Economy class, Premium class, the entrance as a space for communication, a large entrance with access for everyone, the Bistro, and greater luggage capacity.

Development of a new first class seat for SJ 3000 train.

Inside the train, the traveller meets a warm and welcoming environment. Colours and materials blend together in a harmonious unicity. The bright woods, the seating and the lighting amplify the feeling of space. Every single part of the interior, such as seats, lighting, luggage areas, digital screens and a mobile phone area, have been carefully designed to fulfil the unique user experience on the SJ 3000. In first class, a personal sphere has been created with a generous headrest that screens out sound and reduces the field of vision. The textile of the seat and the leather details give an exclusive impression. In second class, the colour scheme is slightly lighter and each seat has extra space for luggage. As a complement to the peaceful interior in the passenger compartments, the bistro combines the sober simplicity of Scandinavian design with the atmosphere of a bar in Barcelona with darker colours, vibrant colour accents, elegant lighting and service at the bar tables. The bistro has been designed in collaboration with Hareide Design. SJ 3000 was awarded with a Red Dot Award in March 2012.With its high design quality, SJ 3000 could inspire the international expert jury of the “red dot award: product design 2012”. It received the globally sought-after red dot for its fine design language in the category product design: transportation
